Executive Functioning

Executive functioning skills are the brain’s “air traffic control system.” They help us plan, organize, manage emotions, shift attention, start tasks, remember information, and complete everyday activities. At Amplifying Potential Therapy, we understand that challenges with executive functioning can impact many parts of daily life, including school participation, social interactions, independence, emotional regulation, and family routines. Our goal is to support children, teens, and young adults in developing practical strategies that help them feel more confident, capable, and successful across environments.

Executive functioning difficulties can look different for every individual. Some children may struggle with organization, time management, or completing multistep tasks. Others may have difficulty transitioning between activities, regulating emotions, maintaining attention, initiating work, or remembering instructions. These challenges are common among neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD, autism, learning disabilities, dyspraxia, and other developmental differences. We approach these differences with a neurodiversity-affirming lens that prioritizes support, understanding, and skill-building rather than compliance-based expectations.

Our clinicians work collaboratively with families and clients to identify which executive functioning skills are creating the greatest barriers in daily life. Therapy sessions are individualized and designed to build functional skills in meaningful and supportive ways. Depending on the child’s needs, sessions may focus on:

  • Planning and organizing schoolwork, belongings, and daily routines

  • Improving task initiation and follow-through

  • Developing time management and scheduling strategies

  • Supporting emotional regulation and flexible thinking

  • Building working memory skills for completing multistep directions and activities

  • Learning self-monitoring and problem-solving strategies

  • Creating systems and routines that increase independence at home and school

  • Supporting transitions between activities and environments

  • Using visual supports, checklists, timers, and external organizational tools effectively

  • Family coaching to help strategies generalize across settings

Our approach emphasizes collaboration, regulation, and practical supports that fit the individual child rather than expecting the child to fit rigid systems. We recognize that executive functioning challenges are not caused by laziness or lack of motivation. Many children are working incredibly hard behind the scenes to manage tasks that may appear simple to others. Therapy focuses on reducing overwhelm, building self-awareness, and creating supports that help children access success while honoring their unique learning profiles.

Executive functioning support may be incorporated into speech-language therapy, social-emotional learning, or AAC services. Sessions are designed to feel engaging, supportive, and achievable while helping children strengthen the skills needed for greater independence and confidence over time.
